I have relatives that fought in WW1 from both sides of my family. On my fathers side Richard McDonald was killed in the Somme offensive on 9 September 1916. On my mothers side of the family three of my uncles fought in WW1. They were Christopher, Sylvester and Patrick Skelly. They were from Turners Cottage on Grand Canal St. According to family tradition they were in different regiment but met on the battlefield of the Somme by chance one day. My uncle Christopher known to the family as Frank returned to Dublin after the war, I have brought in his medal today. His other two brothers Sylvester and Patrick emigrated to Manchester after the war.
